Autoplotter is the ultimate graphing and data analysis software for Windows. It is a compact, free, and open source cross-platform application for working with scientific data sets in 2D or 3D. This program supports over 90 file types including binary, ASCII textual or compressed columnar formats, CSV text files, Excel spreadsheets, HDF5 files and many others. It provides all the necessary functionality to analyze datasets interactively. Datasets can be plotted by entering variables in a table spreadsheet view or point-and-click graphical interface. Variables can be analyzed using automatic linear regression or lowess regression techniques that are easy to apply through Autoplotter's built-in functions. Autoplotter has powerful tools for producing graphs and charts such as drawing lines, making bars charts, creating pie charts, and displaying data as a hierarchical tree of objects. The program uses Extensible Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) to provide interactive control over 3D models and images mapped to the screen. It has a wide range of functions that can be used interactively on datasets such as data visualizations plots for adding new features, extraction of trends and patterns in data, and statistical analysis on the selected variables. The software includes operators and commands which can be used interactively. These include:Autoplotter is cross-platform: it runs on all supported operating systems. It is currently available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The company which develops Autoplotter is called RealityPrime International Ltd. of Nova Scotia, Canada. Autoplotter was created by Eugene Lapin of Ottawa, Canada with the idea that students could use it to analyze data sets of interest without needing to purchase commercial programs. It was first released in 1998 under the name "Autoplot" on SourceForge.net as a free program for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux systems. As of June 2014, the latest release was version 3.3 on SourceForge.net with over 1200 downloads per month since its release in 2010 on SourceForge's network of repositories hosted on Google Code service community site. Autoplotter is sponsored by the South Dakota State University Department of Computer Science, the Science Literacy Foundation and the National Science Foundation. It has received numerous awards, including earning top honors in the 2008 South Dakota Student Choice Awards. Autoplotter was also named one of the best open source programs of its type in 2009 on SourceForge's Top 100 Open Source Projects, and was selected by MacWorld magazine as one of 2011's Best Mac Utilities. It has also received awards from MacWorld for its interface design and best open-source innovation in 2011. The site also won a competition for best open source application in 2010 from OpenSource.com, a website which distributes news articles about open source software applications. A version of Autoplotter was also written for Windows CE. It has been used in classrooms to teach high-school students about statistical analysis. It has also been used at the University of South Dakota in the research lab to visualize data collected from underwater robots. As of September 2013, Eugene Lapin moved Autoplotter's code repository to GitHub, including its open-source license under the Affero GPL v 3.0 license.
